I use the visual and auditory advantages of the "drum
circle" to
create a re-cycled "orchestra" with three different sections.
I use samba and African rhythms to explore the musical possibilities
of junk/re-cycled percussion. This enables me to get elements of the
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 school curriculum across in a fun and exciting
way.
I have facilitated Drumming Workshops from Birmingham to Mablethorpe,
Redditch to Sleaford, Peterborough to Kidderminster etc. I utilise
the "drum-circle" to explore the educational notion of visual,
auditory and kinaesthetic learners.
The rhythms learned are those set out in the National Curriculum for
Music.
At the moment I'm particularly interested in developing the idea of
junk/recycled percussion as a means of exploring environmental issues in
a fun and educative manner. Here students can make as well as play instruments
from recycled materials.
